What it takes to Build a Sustainable Organisation
Where is your organisation on its sustainability journey? If you're here reading this blog, then the good news is, you've at least started! It's important to recognise the starting point and where your company can make changes that will have the biggest impact to get the ball rolling. Often, this will be a Carbon Reduction Plan.
It's certainly a hot topic now for any large organisation and will become more important for businesses, of all sizes, to measure, plan and action for. The sooner you start, the better. It's a fact that carbon is embodied in absolutely every product and service that we consume. And so auditing your company's Co2e emissions is a great place to start.
Carbon reduction is one of the ways that a company can reduce it's impact on the environment and be more sustainable, however it's important to remember that climate change is just one facet of sustainability.
WATCH OUT FOR CARBON TUNNEL VISION!
In the complex transition to business sustainability there are many considerations beyond the scope of carbon reduction in your energy usage, vehicles, commuting, tech and supply chain. We must also consider Ecotoxicity, Air Pollutants, Biodiversity Loss, Poverty, The Water Crisis, Health and Wellbeing, Inequality, Education, Resource Scarcity and Overconsumption, to name a few.
Having said this, in order to reach a NET ZERO scenario emissions must half by 2030 - so carbon reduction is of course a priority. Just bear in mind that as you start to work in earnest to measure, plan and action changes which will lead to a cleaner, greener and more planet conscious organisation you will need to consider using renewable energy, making your tech efficient, and buying credible offsets for your residual carbon emission (those that ‘cannot’ be completely eliminated) as well as:
creating a diverse workforce and supply chain,
use of regenerative business models,
taking care for unseen communities that feel the burden of climate change the most,
the right to reuse and repair,
slowing down - producing and consuming less,
quality of life over growth and profit
It is certainly an ongoing piece of work which will require a road map with continual measure and review.
