UK Green Day and the Importance of Procurement for Net Zero Targets

Today, 30th March is the UK Government Green Day. It is expected to reveal several new green energy policies and decarbonisation commitments, which are intended to help it meet the country’s climate change goals. These policies essentially outline the UK Government's Net Zero Strategy, however there are concerns that some of the important considerations to the plan may not materialise, potentially driving away green investment from the UK and seeing the day being rebranded as “energy security day” instead.

The Net Zero Strategy included 129 recommendations on how the road to net zero could also be the UK’s path to economic growth. However, green groups have expressed concerns that the plans will not go far enough. It is thought that the Government will defend the fossil fuel industry and pump money into carbon capture and storage.

It's so important that businesses do not wait for legislation before doing the work to understand their carbon footprint and start to reduce it, measuring from their baseline year in order to meet the 2030 Paris Agreement target in the EU to cut emissions by at least 55% and the Global Net Zero target to limit temperature increase to 1.5C by 2050. In order to reach Net Zero you must, only once you have taken the actions required to reduce your emissions in each area of your business - especially your scope 3 emissions, which includes your supply chains and staff behaviour - use carbon offsetting schemes to address the remaining carbon balance as part of a strategy to reduce the emissions at the source.
