National Olive Day is an annual celebration held on June 1, created to honor the olive—the ancient fruit beloved in Mediterranean cuisine—with tasty, cultural, and historical appreciation.

Origins & Significance

  • Founded in 2015 by the Mediterranean specialty foods company FOODMatch, under its Divina brand, in collaboration with National Day Calendar

  • The date aligns with the arrival of the new Kalamata olive crop and follows International Mediterranean Diet Month in May, serving as a fitting finale to the celebration of this diet

Why Celebrate Olives?

  • Ancient Legacy: Cultivated in the Mediterranean for over 6,000 years, olives have been symbols of peace, prosperity, and wisdom

  • Health Powerhouse: Packed with monounsaturated fats, antioxidants like vitamin E and polyphenols—helpful for heart health, inflammation reduction, and more

  • Flavorful Varieties: More than 500 olive varieties exist, each with distinct shapes, colours, and taste profiles—from briny and pungent to fruity and buttery
